Lightness With the Word of God
In this passage the people of Jeremiah's day are reproved for using the expression "the burden of the Lord" to refer to the word of prophecy. The sermon explores what lay behind the people's use of this term under four heads: 1) The reproof; 2) A divine remedy prescribed; 3) A refusal of the remedy; and 4) A fearful judgment pronounced against the people, prophets and priests. The sermom shows how both a light and irreverent view of God's Word underlay the use of the term "the burden of the Lord", as well as mistaken view of revelation itself. All this is highly relevant to today's church in an age in which God's people pay lip service to the Word of God, but, in fact, have a light and careless attitude toward it.
