By concluding the first chapter of the epistle with these memorable verses, Peter was underscoring the truth that Christian faith is not resting on the memory of any experience or on the opinion of any private individual. Christianity is not resting on any kind of private vision or interpretation. It is resting on that which God has revealed by His Holy Spirit, and that revelation is recorded infallibly as the Holy Scriptures. These verses, contrary to the efforts of some commentators to make them say less than they actually do, are one of the clearest statements of the doctrine of the inspiration of the Scriptures that can be found anywhere. Peter was making it plain that the words of the Bible are from Heaven.
