The Aggravations of the Sin of Murmuring

Mr. Carroll teaches Burroughs' chapter on how the sin of murmuring is aggravated—that is, compounded and worsened—by particular circumstances, such as murmuring amid abundant mercies (Psalm 77, 105), murmuring over small things (illustrated by Ahab's sulking over Naboth's vineyard in 1 Kings 21), and murmuring after God has raised one from a low estate. He draws on Charles Bridges' commentary on Ecclesiastes 7:14 to show that prosperity and adversity are equally of divine appointment, and expounds Luke 7 (the sinful woman anointing Christ's feet) alongside Paul's self-description as "chief of sinners" (1 Timothy 1) to argue that those who have been forgiven much should be especially content.
